Avalara for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot
Tax, billing and sales people end up asking Avalara the same few things: how tax was worked out on a transaction, where the company has nexus, which exemption certificates are missing or close to expiry, and what totals feed this month’s returns. Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot can now answer those directly. Look-ups and changes sit in different roles, and a tax approver signs off on every change. Your tax lead and our team bring Avalara online in a guided pilot.

Changes, governed
What the assistant can prepare in Avalara
The assistant never saves on its own. It prepares the change, the person checks the preview and confirms, and anything above your limits waits for an approver.
- 1 Prepare The assistant drafts the change from the request.
- 2 Preview and confirm The person sees exactly what will change.
- 3 Approve Above your limits, a second person decides.
- 4 Saved and logged Written to Avalara under a named person.
-
Send a certificate request to an exempt customer
The sales tax manager confirms the customer and states before the request is sent.
-
Change the tax code on a product or service item
Every tax code change needs the tax director to approve, as it affects all future invoices.
-
Adjust a committed transaction after a credit
Adjustments need a tax accountant and a second approver when the tax change exceeds $1,000.
Example rules. During the pilot you set the limits, the approvers and which roles may prepare each change.
Why it needs care
Governance built for Avalara
Every invoice the company sends gets its tax from Avalara, and auditors will ask to see the exemption certificates it holds. Sales staff can look things up but cannot edit. A tax code change reaches all future invoices, so the preview lists the items involved and the tax director decides.

Avalara questions
Can it explain why tax on an invoice looks wrong?
Yes. The assistant reads the transaction in Avalara and shows each jurisdiction, rate and taxability rule that applied, along with any exemption used. Support staff can then tell a customer why the amount differs from a quote.
Does it work with Avalara exemption certificate management?
Yes. People can ask which customers have valid, missing or expiring certificates by state, and tax staff can prepare certificate requests that a manager confirms before Avalara sends them to the customer.
Can it change our nexus settings?
We keep nexus changes out of the assistant by default, since they affect where you collect tax. Tax staff can still ask about nexus and thresholds, then make the change themselves in Avalara.
Does mcpbizapps keep a copy of our Avalara data?
No. When someone asks a question, mcpbizapps reads the answer live from Avalara through a dedicated integration user and returns it without storing it. The audit log records who asked, which tool ran and the result, with personal fields and free text removed.
Avalara is a trademark of its owner. mcpbizapps is not affiliated with Avalara; the name describes the connection only.
