TaxJar for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot

For an online store, TaxJar answers questions that used to wait for the accountant. Ask Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot how much sales tax was collected by state, which states are close to an economic nexus threshold, whether AutoFile has filed this period, which orders came in without tax or which customers are exempt. Store staff read, while exemption and category changes go to an approver. Setup is a guided pilot run with the store owner.

  • Product categories
  • Filings

  • Operations manager

“Which marketplace orders last month came through without any sales tax collected?”

  • Customer service lead

“Why was tax charged on order 21877 to a customer in Pennsylvania?”

Changes, governed

What the assistant can prepare in TaxJar

The assistant never saves on its own. It prepares the change, the person checks the preview and confirms, and anything above your limits waits for an approver.

  1. 1 Prepare The assistant drafts the change from the request.
  2. 2 Preview and confirm The person sees exactly what will change.
  3. 3 Approve Above your limits, a second person decides.
  4. 4 Saved and logged Written to TaxJar under a named person.
  • Mark a wholesale customer as exempt in specific states

The finance manager checks the resale certificate and approves before the exemption is saved.

  • Change the product tax category for a collection

The outside accountant approves every category change.

  • Record a refund transaction for a returned order

The person confirms the preview, and refunds above $1,000 need the finance manager.

Example rules. During the pilot you set the limits, the approvers and which roles may prepare each change.

Why it needs care

Governance built for TaxJar

TaxJar decides what the store collects and, with AutoFile, what gets filed in each state. Store staff can check orders, but exemptions and product categories are off limits to them. If a state sends a notice, the request history shows exactly who changed an exemption and when.

  • Sign-in by work email

Only people you invite, with a one-time code. No shared logins.

  • Roles per tool

Each role reaches only the TaxJar records it needs.

  • View only, if you prefer

Admins can keep a connection to lookups with one switch.

  • A preview first

Every change is shown in full before anything is saved.

  • Approval rules

Above your limits, a second person approves the change.

  • One audit log

Every request tied to a named person, ready for review.

TaxJar questions

Can it tell us where we need to register?

It reports where your sales are near or over economic nexus thresholds based on the transactions in TaxJar. The decision to register stays with you and your accountant, since other factors can matter.

Does it work with marketplace sales?

Yes. People can ask about orders from marketplaces imported into TaxJar and see which ones the marketplace collected tax on, which helps avoid paying tax twice on the same sale.

Can it turn AutoFile on or off?

No. Filing settings stay in TaxJar with the account owner. The assistant can tell you which states are on AutoFile and the status of recent filings for each state and period.

Does mcpbizapps keep a copy of our TaxJar data?

No. When someone asks a question, mcpbizapps reads the answer live from TaxJar through a dedicated integration user and returns it without storing it. The audit log records who asked, which tool ran and the result, with personal fields and free text removed.

TaxJar is a trademark of its owner. mcpbizapps is not affiliated with Stripe; the name describes the connection only.
