AWS Cost Explorer for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot
Cost Explorer holds spend by service and linked account, costs split by cost allocation tags and cost categories, Savings Plans coverage and next month's forecast. mcpbizapps lets finance and engineering teams ask about all of it in Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot. Each role sees only the accounts and categories it is allowed, and tag or category changes need approval. Access is arranged in a guided pilot, where the FinOps lead decides which accounts come first.

Changes, governed
What the assistant can prepare in AWS Cost Explorer
The assistant never saves on its own. It prepares the change, the person checks the preview and confirms, and anything above your limits waits for an approver.
- 1 Prepare The assistant drafts the change from the request.
- 2 Preview and confirm The person sees exactly what will change.
- 3 Approve Above your limits, a second person decides.
- 4 Saved and logged Written to AWS Cost Explorer under a named person.
-
Save a Cost Explorer report for a team's monthly review
A saved report moves no costs, so the person saving it is the only approver.
-
Activate a cost allocation tag
The FinOps lead approves, since it changes how costs appear in future reports.
-
Propose a new rule in a cost category
Sent to the FinOps lead for approval because it moves costs between teams.
Example rules. During the pilot you set the limits, the approvers and which roles may prepare each change.
Why it needs care
Governance built for AWS Cost Explorer
Cost Explorer shows spend for every linked account, including discounts and commitments that finance treats as confidential. Each role is held to its accounts and cost categories, and questions stay within sensible date ranges. Tag and category changes move costs between teams, so they wait for the FinOps lead. Finance can review every request.

AWS Cost Explorer questions
Can ChatGPT answer cloud cost questions from Cost Explorer?
Yes. The assistant reads cost and usage by the service, account, tag or cost category you ask for, over the period you choose, and explains the change, with the filters it used shown alongside.
Is there a charge for Cost Explorer requests?
Amazon charges a small fee for each Cost Explorer request made outside the console. mcpbizapps keeps each answer to as few requests as possible, and admins can see request counts by role in the activity log.
Can it cover all accounts in our organization?
Yes, when connected to the management account. Roles then decide which linked accounts each person can ask about, so a team lead sees their own accounts while finance sees the whole organization.
Does mcpbizapps keep a copy of our AWS Cost Explorer data?
No. When someone asks a question, mcpbizapps reads the answer live from AWS Cost Explorer through a dedicated integration user and returns it without storing it. The audit log records who asked, which tool ran and the result, with personal fields and free text removed.
AWS Cost Explorer is a trademark of its owner. mcpbizapps is not affiliated with Amazon; the name describes the connection only.
