Canvas LMS for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot
Instructors and academic staff can ask Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot about Canvas: which students are missing assignments, which submissions still need grading in SpeedGrader, how a section did on a quiz and which courses have unpublished modules before term starts. Each person stays in their own courses, and a due date extension is shown before it is saved. Requests are logged. Canvas comes to your institution through a guided pilot.

Changes, governed
What the assistant can prepare in Canvas LMS
The assistant never saves on its own. It prepares the change, the person checks the preview and confirms, and anything above your limits waits for an approver.
- 1 Prepare The assistant drafts the change from the request.
- 2 Preview and confirm The person sees exactly what will change.
- 3 Approve Above your limits, a second person decides.
- 4 Saved and logged Written to Canvas LMS under a named person.
-
Extend an assignment due date for one student
Extensions inside the term are the instructor's call; going past the course end date needs the department chair.
-
Post an announcement to a course
The instructor confirms the text before posting; announcements to more than five courses need a program lead to approve.
-
Enter a grade change in the gradebook
The instructor confirms each change, and changes after final grades are submitted need the registrar's approval.
Example rules. During the pilot you set the limits, the approvers and which roles may prepare each change.
Why it needs care
Governance built for Canvas LMS
Canvas holds student work, grades and feedback, often for minors in K to 12 schools. Instructors see their own courses and advisors see their advisees. Late grade changes and announcements to many courses need a second person. When a parent or student questions who viewed a record, each lookup has a name and time.

Canvas LMS questions
Can ChatGPT see Canvas grades?
Only for people whose role covers that course or student, such as the instructor or an assigned advisor. Lookups read live Canvas data, are not stored by mcpbizapps, and are logged by name.
Can it grade submissions?
No. Grading stays with instructors and teaching assistants. It can tell which submissions wait for grading and prepare a grade entry from the instructor's own score, which the instructor confirms before it is saved.
Does it work with Canvas sections and cross-listed courses?
Yes. Questions can cover one section or the whole course, and roles respect the section limits set in Canvas, so a teaching assistant assigned to one section sees only those students.
Does mcpbizapps keep a copy of our Canvas LMS data?
No. When someone asks a question, mcpbizapps reads the answer live from Canvas LMS through a dedicated integration user and returns it without storing it. The audit log records who asked, which tool ran and the result, with personal fields and free text removed.
Canvas LMS is a trademark of its owner. mcpbizapps is not affiliated with Instructure; the name describes the connection only.
