Alation for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot

Which table is the right one? The Alation data catalog knows, along with what a glossary term means, who the steward is and whether a data source carries a warning or deprecation flag. Through mcpbizapps, people ask Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot. Each person reaches the catalog content their role allows, and edits go to stewards as a preview. Your catalog admin and our team connect Alation in a guided pilot.

  • Data steward

“Which columns in the Sales data source still have no description?”

  • Finance analyst

“What does the glossary term Gross Bookings mean, and which shared queries in Alation use it?”

Changes, governed

What the assistant can prepare in Alation

The assistant never saves on its own. It prepares the change, the person checks the preview and confirms, and anything above your limits waits for an approver.

  1. 1 Prepare The assistant drafts the change from the request.
  2. 2 Preview and confirm The person sees exactly what will change.
  3. 3 Approve Above your limits, a second person decides.
  4. 4 Saved and logged Written to Alation under a named person.
  • Add a description to a table or column

The steward of that data source approves the text before it is published.

  • Flag a table with a warning about a known issue

Any catalog user may propose it; the steward confirms the wording before others see it.

  • Propose a new term in a glossary

Goes to the glossary owner for approval; terms tied to finance metrics also need the finance data lead.

Example rules. During the pilot you set the limits, the approvers and which roles may prepare each change.

Why it needs care

Governance built for Alation

Alation is where people decide which data to trust. A wrong description or a missing warning flag can send an analyst to a stale table. Reading follows each role. Any description, flag or term an assistant drafts goes to the right steward first, and the catalog history keeps the name of whoever suggested it.

  • Sign-in by work email

Only people you invite, with a one-time code. No shared logins.

  • Roles per tool

Each role reaches only the Alation records it needs.

  • View only, if you prefer

Admins can keep a connection to lookups with one switch.

  • A preview first

Every change is shown in full before anything is saved.

  • Approval rules

Above your limits, a second person approves the change.

  • One audit log

Every request tied to a named person, ready for review.

Alation questions

Can ChatGPT tell me which table to use from Alation?

Yes. The assistant searches the catalog for the topic, checks trust flags, popularity and stewards, and suggests the best match with a link. If a table carries a warning or deprecation flag, it says so before recommending it.

Can assistants edit the Alation catalog?

They prepare edits. Descriptions, flags and terms appear as a preview, the person confirms, and the steward approves before anything is published. Every edit records who proposed it, so the catalog history stays clear.

Does it work with Alation Cloud Service?

Yes. The pilot covers Alation Cloud Service or a customer-managed Alation instance, using an integration user limited to the catalog areas you approve for assistants to read. Setup includes a private connection where your instance needs one.

Does mcpbizapps keep a copy of our Alation data?

No. When someone asks a question, mcpbizapps reads the answer live from Alation through a dedicated integration user and returns it without storing it. The audit log records who asked, which tool ran and the result, with personal fields and free text removed.

Alation is a trademark of its owner. mcpbizapps is not affiliated with Alation; the name describes the connection only.
