Clio for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot
Lawyers and staff at firms on Clio can ask Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot how much time is unbilled on a matter, what is on the calendar, which bills are more than 60 days overdue and where a trust balance has dropped below the retainer. Access follows the matters each person may already open. Trust money is never moved. The guided pilot starts with your billing and calendar data in Clio.

Changes, governed
What the assistant can prepare in Clio
The assistant never saves on its own. It prepares the change, the person checks the preview and confirms, and anything above your limits waits for an approver.
- 1 Prepare The assistant drafts the change from the request.
- 2 Preview and confirm The person sees exactly what will change.
- 3 Approve Above your limits, a second person decides.
- 4 Saved and logged Written to Clio under a named person.
-
Draft a time entry from notes of a client call
The lawyer confirms the entry; entries over three hours on one day need the billing partner to approve.
-
Create a task on a matter for a paralegal
Tasks go to the paralegal already assigned to that matter, once the creator confirms the due date.
-
Prepare a draft bill from unbilled time on a matter
The responsible attorney reviews the draft, and write-downs over 10% need the managing partner to approve.
Example rules. During the pilot you set the limits, the approvers and which roles may prepare each change.
Why it needs care
Governance built for Clio
Bar rules treat trust accounting and client confidences strictly, and Clio holds both. A lawyer only reaches matters they already work on. Time entries and draft bills appear on screen before anything is saved, write-downs over 10% go to the managing partner, and each lookup is logged against the matter it touched.
-
Sign-in by work email

-

-

Clio questions
Can the assistant record time in Clio for me?
It drafts a time entry with the matter, date, duration and narrative from your notes. You see the entry as a preview and confirm it, and entries above the limits your firm sets wait for the billing partner.
Does it work with Clio trust accounting?
It reads trust balances and transactions so staff can see which matters are below their retainer. It does not create trust transfers or payments, which stay with your bookkeeper in Clio.
Can it run a quick conflict search in Clio?
It can search contacts and matters for a name or company and list what it finds, which helps intake staff. That search supports your conflict check, while the decision stays with the lawyer who runs it.
Does mcpbizapps keep a copy of our Clio data?
No. When someone asks a question, mcpbizapps reads the answer live from Clio through a dedicated integration user and returns it without storing it. The audit log records who asked, which tool ran and the result, with personal fields and free text removed.
Clio is a trademark of its owner. mcpbizapps is not affiliated with Clio; the name describes the connection only.
