Microsoft Excel for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot

Finance, sales and project teams can ask Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot about Excel workbooks stored in OneDrive and SharePoint: cost centers over forecast, accruals with no support, reps below quota and risks with no owner. People reach workbooks they can already open, and added rows or changed cells are shown before saving. The guided pilot starts with the workbooks your FP&A team names.

Ask in a sentence

What can your team ask Microsoft Excel?

Questions from FP&A analyst, controller, sales manager and others, answered from live Microsoft Excel data and only for the people allowed to see them.

Records it works with

  • Workbooks
  • Worksheets
  • Tables
  • Named ranges
  • PivotTables
  • Comments
  • FP&A analyst

“In the Q4 Forecast workbook, which cost centers are more than 5% over forecast?”

  • Controller

“Which lines in the Month-End Accruals table have no supporting reference?”

  • Sales manager

“From the Territory Quotas workbook, who is below 70% of quota with three weeks left?”

  • Operations analyst

“Summarize the PivotTable on the Returns sheet by product line.”

  • Project manager

“Which rows in the RAID Log table are risks with no mitigation owner?”

  • Procurement analyst

“Compare unit prices for the top 20 parts across the two supplier quote workbooks.”

Changes, governed

What the assistant can prepare in Microsoft Excel

The assistant never saves on its own. It prepares the change, the person checks the preview and confirms, and anything above your limits waits for an approver.

  1. 1 Prepare The assistant drafts the change from the request.
  2. 2 Preview and confirm The person sees exactly what will change.
  3. 3 Approve Above your limits, a second person decides.
  4. 4 Saved and logged Written to Microsoft Excel under a named person.
  • Add rows to an Excel table, such as new accruals

The person confirms the rows; any line above $10,000 needs the controller to approve.

  • Update input cells in a forecast model

Changes to a workbook marked final need the FP&A lead to approve.

  • Add a comment on a cell for the workbook owner

The person checks the comment wording before it is added.

Example rules. During the pilot you set the limits, the approvers and which roles may prepare each change.

Why it needs care

Governance built for Microsoft Excel

Forecasts, quotas and reconciliations in Excel feed board reports, and one changed input can move every total. Accrual lines above $10,000 need the controller. Workbooks marked final need the FP&A lead before any input changes, and formulas are never rewritten. Reviewers can see who read or edited which sheet.

  • Sign-in by work email

Only people you invite, with a one-time code. No shared logins.

  • Roles per tool

Each role reaches only the Microsoft Excel records it needs.

  • View only, if you prefer

Admins can keep a connection to lookups with one switch.

  • A preview first

Every change is shown in full before anything is saved.

  • Approval rules

Above your limits, a second person approves the change.

  • One audit log

Every request tied to a named person, ready for review.

Microsoft Excel questions

Does it work with Excel files on my laptop?

It works with workbooks saved in OneDrive or SharePoint, which the connection can reach under your company sign-in. A file kept only on a laptop is out of reach until it is saved to one of those places.

Can the assistant read PivotTables and named ranges?

Yes. It reads the values a PivotTable shows and the cells in named ranges and tables, and it names the sheet and range behind each answer so a reviewer can check the figure.

Will it rewrite formulas in our models?

No. Formulas and model structure stay with the people who own the workbook. The assistant prepares changes to input cells and table rows, each one previewed before it is saved.

Does mcpbizapps keep a copy of our Microsoft Excel data?

No. When someone asks a question, mcpbizapps reads the answer live from Microsoft Excel through a dedicated integration user and returns it without storing it. The audit log records who asked, which tool ran and the result, with personal fields and free text removed.

Microsoft Excel is a trademark of its owner. mcpbizapps is not affiliated with Microsoft; the name describes the connection only.
